Camera advice

To be honest, I'd just stick with a recent model phone and get a tripod / gorilla pod or similar for stability.

The resolution and insane processing power on phones is so good these days, I don't think you'll be missing much vs a dSLR or mirrorless.

I have to agree on the phone + tripod option.

I have 2 camera's I used for plant pictures before. Now they sit on a shelf un-used. Price wise a great Cell phone is probably cheaper than a good SLR camera and lens's

A good tripod and a timer for delayed pictures will do wonders. Either way, you need to take 5 to 10 pictures to find 1 great one

If you did want to go the camera route, something like the Canon G5X would be a good choice. Small and well featured, can be used on the family holidays too. Has macro mode, but the depth of field is very slim, so a tripod/stand is needed, and you may not get all that you want in focus.
I have the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 lens, now thats a bitch to operate, but if you want a pic of a single trich, thats the lens!
The Canon 24-70 f/4L IS lens has a dedicated macro mode. Nice lens. You may be picking up that Im a Canon fan!
