Koala Nuts

Small Update:

Soaked the beans in the vinegar solution KB suggests in the tips and tricks section. It worked very well imo, after about 8hrs all but one had popped. I removed the seeds from the vinegar solution at the 12 hr mark. Then placed the seeds in plain distilled water for an additional 12 hrs to get them going a bit more and give that straggler some time to pop as well.

After 24 hrs soaking the straggler hasn’t popped and the others went into the germ dome. Have got to say pretty good germ rate for me 👍
Peace!

Alright y’all I’m going to have to call this one a dud. Unfortunately not one of my Koala Nuts made it out of the plugs. Honestly don’t know what happened here, I know I’m not the most experienced but I’m usually able to get at least a few graduated to the veg tent.

After about four days, I noticed the plugs started retaining a lot of moisture from me misting the dome top and it seemed like nothing was trying to break the surface. Usually this does not happen. I decided to take the seeds out of the plugs to see what was up. Two seeds had very little white tails but nothing long enough to catch hold of the plug. The rest seemed to be in the same state as when I took them out of the germ water. Cracked open but that’s about it. I decided to carefully rehome all of the seeds to solo cups with coco in hopes the plugs were just not working out for them. Waited another few days and still nothing. It’s been 14 days since initial attempt. I’ll keep them going for another week or so in case something happens but for now I’m calling this one quits.

A few places I feel I went wrong, firstly I didn’t use the paper towel method after they popped. Against my better judgement I decided to move straight to the plugs. I have been doing okay with this method lately but I know the PT is more full proof. Secondly, I used a vinegar solution to help pop the seeds. I do not have experience with this method and It is possible I screwed up the dilution ratio and they were doomed from the start. I read in the article that vinegar can become harmful when the seeds become exposed to it for too long. I could have left those mofos in the vinegar water for too long.
Who knows.

I am kinda bummed, was really looking forward to testing out the Lucy x Hotcakes for my slipped disc (painful AF). The CBD aspect of Lucy with the potency of Hotcakes was for sure going to be a banger.

Oh well, I still have some Blue Nips and Chedda Platinum going which I’ve been updating on discord so check me out there.

Better luck next time.

We are back in business people! Thanks to Katsu and the crew for getting me hooked up with new beans.

I only popped five this time. I’m running low on space. Two successfully popped out of the coco but still had their seed shells stuck to the point they were becoming stunted a bit. I grabbed tweezers and pulled the shells off.

I went digging in the three duds. Two were stunted and one had its cotyledons but it was all wonky. I straightened it out a little and placed the cotyledons above the coco, seems like she’s doing okay for now.

Anyways, so here we are currently. I’m happy to have one really nice seedling going, I’m sure the others will follow shortly.

I have had similar problems with my own and other people seeds. I started letting them open fully in the paper towel or close to it. I won't plant a seed anymore unless it has at least a half inch long tail. Then you can plant the seed with it only the root buried and the seed or leaves on top of the soil. Since I have went to longer tails, I have yet to have a seed quit me after planting.

I see, never considered letting the tails get that long before transplanting. I will give it a try for sure.

How are you looking? I never had problems with beans popping. The plants themselves actually have great structure as I remember.

Hey 👋🏽. one is taking off well, the others not so great. I’m still holding out hope for them.

Could be a multitude of reasons imo. user error being my main suspect. Maybe the beans are a little stubborn now, they are a little older? I don’t know but I’m growing Blue Nips and Chedda Platinum from Katsu and they are both very vigorous with beast structures as well so I don’t doubt it. They both popped with ease and are well on their way, Koala Nuts just doesn’t like me I guess ha

i leave the beans in the towel for 3 days minimum, any longer is definitely not on purpose, however sometimes I wait longer than day 3 because of not seeing what I need to see to merit being planted. Once you plant solo cup them, this mitigates any overwatering you may induce in a bigger pot. Keep em there til they outgrow the cup, then transplant. This is the method I’ve used with success. Hope it helps in the future.

I typically wait until at least day 3 as well or I just plant directly into the coco. It kinda depends how lazy I’m being.

Not a huge fan of using the plugs for starting seeds, I’ve had a lot more success going directly into the solo cups as well.

It kinda sucks is this the lounges intro to my grow journals. I promise I know what I’m doing to a certain extent

No judgement homie. Just extending an olive branch, per say. Keep up the good work.

Small little update for the Koala Nuts:

They’re starting to take off now and have been chilling in the veg tent. I want to say all they needed was a little TLC but the honest truth is they needed me to forget about them for a while and just do their own thing. The one gallon stretched a bit so I topped her, saved the top and once that baby takes off a little I will switch these lady’s to flower. So far so good.
