New camera advice

Hey guys I was thinking about buying a new camera so I can take some sick shots to go along with grow journals. I'm very ignorant when it comes to photography. I used to have an old Pentax that I loved but she is outdated now. That camera's pics still look decent today but I've just been using my iphone lately with the attachment to take macros to check maturity really. Anyway, I'm thinking about a Nikon D5600 or Coolpix P900 or P950. I got about 5 hundo for a budget and could go a little over but don't wanna go crazy here on something pretty much for just weed pics, lol. I think I'm leaning towards the D5600 as the Coolpix is badass but more for like shooting birds or something. I know I'll have to get a nice lens attachment for the D5600 to take sick macros but that's fine. Anyone got any advice who has experience?

I am like you, I don't have a lot of photography experience. My Kodak Pixpro AZ-405 didn't work worth a shit for pictures, until I learned how to use it in manual mode. With the money you are talking about, it might give you a better camera. With the right lens's you should be able to get great pictures if you know the right settings.

The new phone camera's these days take excellent pictures. I would use my phone all the time, if I didn't have to send pics to my e-mail address so I could post with my computer. A tripod and a holder for your phone can take great pictures. Just make sure to use a timer when you take pictures. Any movement at all can blur trichomes.

excellent advice thanks man.

If you’re trying to rock the dslr in manual mode you really just need to understand iso, shutter speed, and aperture. Some quick YT videos have lots of info for beginners. Any of the dslrs you’ve mentioned would be great but just as @Jackalope has mentioned it’s pretty hard for cameras nowadays to compete with smartphones. The smartphones have become so advanced and convenient.

For the DSLR you’ll want to invest in a macro lens, tripod, shutter release or use the timer for those awesome trichome shots. If you’re in the used market, check out KEH Camera they have solid prices and great quality used gear. Good luck OP can’t wait to see what photos you make!
